    Hi Ingo,

i just heard your Sultans version on PureSolo Comp. Very nice !

As it sounds very close to the original, I have a question : waht PU did you use ? Middle + bridge or middle only Wink

    Thanks

I used middle plus neck. The neck PU is the Dimarzio FS-1, and I found that playing this one together with the stock Fender PUs results in a less nasal, less hollow sound.

    Thanks Ingo Smile

Middle + neck ! Well I can say it works fine, at least, it sounds very close to Mark's sound I think.

It's strange because usually, I find the neck+middle sound MORE hollow than middle + bridge, but I haven't got FS-1 :(

On OES tour, he played Sultans on neck+middle, on the Pensa, but it's the only tour I know where he played Sultans this way, or maybe in 96 too ? On all others, he played middle +bridge, or neck just for the solo in late 78.

If you had the FS1, I guess it was the rosewood strat in bare wood finsih, the one you used for WWE ?

Can you tell us more about the gear you used : amp, effects ,

I guess you used the Musicman, morley volume pedal, mxr analog delay ? Did you use the orange comp ?

Again, congratulations for your playing ! Laugh

I know that the combination neck & middle PU is rather untypical for the early DS sound (there are hardly any pics showing him using  it live). However, I assume that it was occasionally used, e.g. Once Upon a time in the west on some of the  early `79 gigs, possibly even on the album.

On the puresolo I used the `62 (right, the same as on the WWE demo) through a blackface Fender Pro Reverb, no Morley, no MXR delay, but a bit Exciter and a bit limiting.

Afaik he played Sultans in 96 with the Pensa on neck + middle, too. And in 2005 he played Sailing to Philadelphia and Going home on his Signature Strat on neck and middle.

    Hi,

a bit late again, but I was on holliday, againLaugh

    @ Ingo :

I agree that Once upon a time could be neck+middle on the studio version. It's maybe the reason why he used the neck PU live.

I also tend to think that WDYTYG was neck+middle, as it sounds more "hollow" than others. Well, I have to say that I use more neck+middle than bridge +middle when I want to play some rhythm arpeggios like News, Single handed sailor or so. I find that bridge +middle fit more with lead like six blade knife, down to the Waterline and so on.

same with the rhythm/lead guitar from Angel of Mercy. To it has always sounded neck+middle, until we discovered that it might have been the Baldwin-12.

About the gear you used, it seems I was totally wrongConfused (except for the guitarSmile). Can you explain me (againEmbarassed) what does the Exciter ? Does it add a litlle more gain ? More trebble ? or Something else ?

    Thanks

    @ the Wizzard

thanks for the info about 96, I wasn't sure.

Right for STP, strange that he played Going home on neck+middle in 2001, wasn't this song always middle +bridge ?

But, he could have changed, as he did on Telegraph road : neck+middle  since 91 (on pensa), but bridge+middle before (alchemy and LOG) and neck PU on the Schecter black Tele in 81.

I've always wonder : whats in his mind ? when he goes on tour, he asks himself :" hum, and if I 'd try another PU ?" ?Confused

Ingo, sorry to ask againEmbarassed but could you explain (in just few words) what does the Exciter ? Does it add a litlle more gain ? More trebble ? or Something else ?

Maybe you have explained it before, but I can't find where Embarassed

    many thanks

The Exciter makes the signal brighter, it adds treble. However, it is not really a treble booster because it does not boost high frequencies (like you can do with any EQ). Instead, it adds some kind of distortion to add harmonics (you don't hear the distortion).

The "original" exciter was introduced by Aphex and soon became a standard tool to make dull mixes brighter in the 80ies (in fact it was soon overused). The info that an Exciter was used on album one is not confirmed, I tried with and without for this solo and liked it with better.

I was thinking again about this debate we had some months ago about the PU used by Mark on the studio version of Sultans.

I was pro-middle PU, while many others claimed it was middle+ bridge as it is commonly said.

Now, after knowing Ingo's setup on the PuresoloComp, and considering that Ingo's tone is very close to the orginal one, I wonder if he didn't solved the mystery !

    So maybe here's the secret : It's not middle, it's not midlle+bridge, it's middle+FS1 !

We didn't think about neck+middle because this combination is generally more hollow than the Sultans tone. But Ingo found the trick : the FS-1 is less hollow than standard fender neck PU, and of course Mark had teh FS1 on his rosewood strat (so it's also a clue to know which strat was used on Sultans : the rosewood one, and not the maple as seen on the clip)

Even Mark himself doesn't remember that !

And when he decided to use middle+bridge on the single Pathway version and keep it for all the 80ies, he left in limbo the orignal setup ! It's only in 92 and 96 that he brought it again to light ! And surely unintentionally ! But he didn't manage to reproduce the original tone ! (of course I know it wasn't his aim).

Ingo : you're the man who sounds more Knopflerish than Knopfler himself !Laugh

It is so hard to tell which pick-up position it was, I just tried to get closer and closer to the original sound, you know trying all kind of guitars and amps to see which works best over that great backing track. I finally prefered a rosewood Strat to a maple neck, a Fender amp to the Music Man, and the middle + FS-1 to the other positions. But who knows, maybe Mark just used the opposite.

    BTW, if you say

" his rosewood strat (so it's also a clue to know which strat was used on Sultans : the rosewood one, and not the maple as seen on the clip)"

don't forget that he started to swap the pickguards at this time, the maple neck on that video clip also has the pickguard with the FS-1 !

(not true but thanks for the last line Cool )
