On this page I put together various guitars, amps, effects, and gadgets that I can recommend to everyone who wants good stuff for Mark Knopfler's sound and style. I am not talking about the original gear that Knopfler plays since most of us cannot afford it anyway, but of reasonably priced stuff to get similar results. Some of the gear are budget products that give you the best value for little money, others are products that are known for their reliability and good sound.

Hi,
I'm very impressed by Squier's Classic Vibes Strat series, the '60s would of course be the best best. Really good for that classic MK Strat tone… they are very cheap quality guitars…
For Les Pauls I'd look into a Vintage V100… they are not as dark and muddy as say Epiphones, Tokai's etc.. but more like the late '50s Gibsons…
Cheers, Emiel

just a simple question about gear, that i did not saw it answered anywhere (maybe i'm wrong):
what is the use of strings for Mark?
which string gauge did he used in the guitars he had through out the years?
ande the ones he uses today?
0.09, 0.10 or 0.11?
i know he uses heavier strings on the Jurassic Strat, but only that.
thanks in advance,
Gabriel.

Hi,
As far as i know Mark uses 0.09 strings for Sultans of Swing and Romeo and Juliet (final solo). I think, Going Home is also played on these strings. 0.10 are being used for What It Is and Sailing to Philadelphia. And MK's '58 Les Paul is equipped with 0.11 strings (Brothers in Arms and some others, I think).
I don't know about strings on Pensa and '59 Les Paul but I think there are 0.09 or 0.10 on Pensa and 0.10 on Les Paul.
And yes, MK's Jurassic Strat is equipped with very heavy strings. The G string is wounded like it was back in 50's.
I also would like to recommend American Vinatge 57/62 pickups for early Straits' sound.
Cheers,
Alex.

I visited long ago the page for recommended gear for mk style but can't find it anymore, does somebody know where to find it again? (mainly interested in the fender recommended amp and where to get a resonator guitar like the one on brothers in arms album)..
Links that do not work anymore:

Hi!
I'm thinking of buying new pickups for my strat. Which one is better for the early Dire Straits sound, Texas Special or Haussel ST Classic pickups?

Hi Frosty,
generally, both sets are great. The Texas Specials are ideal for the contemporary MK sound (of course, that's what he uses) while the Haeussels are closer to the vintage sound, remember, he had stock vintage PUs in his Fenders back then (except the Dimarzio in one of them).
My recommendation (that's what I just put in my guitar): 2 Haeussels classic for bridge and middle, and a VFS-1 for the neck position. With the VFS-1 you will get the vintage sound in the neck position (e.g. like at Rockpalast show), plus the Dimarzio sound, switchable with e.g. a push/pull poti.
Check out this video which compares the VFS-1 to a 'real' 1955 vintage pickup, and to a Dimarzio FS-1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..nPM-0rS2sw
