I recently asked about pickups on the Grosh guitar, and Ingo confirmed they are P90.

I would like to know a little more about these PU

A friend of mine told me that P90 pickups are single coils PU, but "bigger" than fender style PU. "they are somewhere between single soils PU and humbuckers".

He said that to me when I pointed out that Gilmour made a LP goldtop sounding like a strat, e.g. the solo on Another brick in the wall part2, or the "remember that night" dvd.

Is it true ? I had always thought that all Les Paul had double PU. So, are really P90 "big single coils PU" ?

    thanks

    Hi,

maybe this link can help you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P-90

Afaik Gilmour really played the solo on ABITW with a P90 Les Paul.

I think the best way to find out if it's true is to test a guitar with P90 PUs Laugh

    Best wishes

Yes, they are basically "big single coils" but sound fatter and warmer than a standard Fender single coil.

Mark's Les Paul Special – the guitar he played before Dire Straits – also had P90ies

    Thanks for the responses Smile

yes, I know that the ABITW solo is played on a LP goldtop with P90 (the funky rhythm si on the bridge PU of the #001 strat, according to Gilmourish), but at first, I had always thought it was the neck PU of a strat. And many people thought the same, I guessConfused

When I discovered it was a LP (some years ago) I was surprised, but when I understand it was P90 (some months ago) it was more clear : a P90 is a bit close to a strat PU (e.g. a FS-1 Wink), if I can say.

on the "remember that night" DVD, he plays one of his songs on the goldtop, and you can hear what I mean : it's a LP, but it sounds "close" to a strat.

thanks again for adding more precisions to my (little) knowledge Smile

MK's Gibson Super 400 is also fitted with P90s. Mark played that guitar on Your Latest Trick during On Every Street tour. Also, I've read somwhere that he used his Super 400 on the outro of On Every Street during the recording.

I think he said the Super 400 was used for the guitar part after "on every street" (e.g. 0:38), played with a pick through the brown Vibrolux with the tremolo on.

Mark's Super 400 doesn't have the P90 pick-ups (you might be right that they normally had) but the Gibson Alnico pick-up which has square pole pieces instead of round ones (top P90, bottom Alnico)

Gibson P90 (top) and Alnico (bottom) pick-ups
