I heard pieces from the tour and wondered if Mark can still play the fast licks like Alchemy. They say he is not interested  and writes wonderful songs now, but sometimes I think sultans of swing or telegraph road not sound right no more, more easy and slow now. What do you guys think?

Well, I think Mark CAN play fast but he is not interested in playing that way no more. His music is getting more mellow and jazzy so, in my opinion, his fast passages won't fit his nowadays musical style.

as much as i love the man ,he messes up sultans every night these days for some reason, duff notes in each solo last time i saw him on the shangri,la tour i was cringing at the bum notes, but he's wise and even though he's played sultans a million times he know he has to play it cus thats what most people want. even though he does'nt seem to put much effort in to it ,shame really but to the point he can't play as fast as he could no way ,over 60 now things slow down just a fact of life me thinks!

be good to one another ,take care of one another and we'll be around so see you next time alright!!

I'm with AlexRUS. Take a look at the SoS performance at the Prince's Trust. There he explains that he tried to play it many ways (eg the way he played it during the 80s) but eventually he felt like the original song was the best, partially because when people think of Sultans, they think of the studio version, not the extended solos of the 80s.

So he can still do all the fancy stuff, but isn't interested in it anymore indeed… and I respect that. The 80s version of Sultans is definately what got me to pick up the guitar myself, but I have gotten to like the original record at least as much as the live versions lately…
