    3. I missed the four-answer possibility, but some music theory, solos in relation to chord structure etc, could be interesting too.

    4. Ingo any ideas on when the Music Man 130 212 amps came in, seems to me like at the start of the European/British tour Oct/Nov 78. I wonder after meeting Jerry Wexler, Barry Beckett at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios was it suggested by them as good amps to try as it seems that they were used after that time – see Chorus TV (TV) 14th Oct? Also I wonder was the Where Do You Think Your Going demo at pathway (Nov 78) recorded with a music man if that was the case. However the recording of Communiqué (Album) was Dec 78 but I read using borrowed amps (probably just some good old tube fenders) from Robert Palmer because Compass Points amps wheren’t suitable.

    5. I think you are very close with the date for the Music Man. In fact the demo of WDYTYG sounds like the Music Man to me. I can imagine that they considered the MM as a good live amp (stable, much power) but maybe they liked the Fenders better for studio?

    6. Hello Ingo.

Thank you for your work ! I am a big fan of Knopfler and try to duplicate his tone and this site really helps.
I reacently found out the song : Suicide Towers. I really like this song, typical Knopfler. Do you have a article about that song somewhere? the only movie i could find is when Dire Straits is filmed in their practise room but couldn’t really find out what to do. I also would like to ask what would be a perfect amp to duplicate the early Dire Straits clean tone.

      Thank you

    7. I’ve always dream about a list of all songs of all albums which describe all we want ti know :) :
      - Who play what
      - which gear is used

of course, I know we don’t have enough accurate information for all songs, but even if it is speculation, I think it would be very interesting to have a similar article to the one you did about Slow train coming : each song analysed with the gear used, but this time for each album :)

And the graal what I’m looking for : who play which part on all songs ! :)

I know we’ve disccuss that by mails some years ago, but it’s “too much fun” :) :):)

    8. Iwould like some precisions about MFN gear :

It’s common said that a wha is used on the studio version.

I hear the wha from OES tour to 2005, but in studio, in 85-86, even at the Mandela concert or Prince Trust, EC 88 tour etc…, I don’t hear some wha, even fixed.

The diffrence is very audible between e.g. On the night and Mandela, and it’s the same guitar (pensa) and the smae amp I think (Soldano), so I guess the main difference is there’s no wha during the 85-90 period.

But Mark and Guy (even Neil Dordfsman ? I’m not sure)always talk about the wha used in studio. So what’s true ?

Do you know the final answer ?

And by the way, when I listen to concerts frome the GH 96 tour, in the intro onf the song, I sometimes hear “changing wha” as if Mark had his foot above the pedal, but I’ve read that the wha was fixed, and only in rack, so ? are my ears mad ?

    9. I’m intrigued to know if the 7.25 fretboard radius of th MK sig model is any use to bend strings on???

    10. I just have a comment,I don’t know if it is just mine or other MK signature model red Strats, but I ordered mine from Guitar center,it looks great, but the set-up is terrible,pick-ups too low, strings too high, and when I set the string height on it where it is suppose to be,now I got terrible fret buzz..the guitar really needs to have the frets dressed, and a total set-up done on it to be playable…I’m really disappointed in fender that they shoot these out the door this way…This is suppost to be a great guitar, and I struggled to buy this and pay for it,I really wanted it bad, instead I got a $1699.00 piece of junk…
