Recommended gear for the MK style
Posted in: by Ingo on February 26, 2010
On this page I put together various guitars, amps, effects, and gadgets that I can recommend to everyone who wants good stuff for Mark Knopfler’s sound and style. I am not talking about the original gear that Knopfler plays since most of us cannot afford it anyway, but of reasonably priced stuff to get similar results. Some of the gear are budget products that give you the best value for little money, others are products that are known for their reliability and good sound.
| Gear | Buy in Europe | Buy in the US |

Effects: CompressorRequired to get the smooth lead sound heard on e.g. early Dire Straits stuff | Sam Ash Boss CS3 compressor Sam Ash Boss MXR dyna comp |

Resonator GuitarAn affordable version of Mark Knopfler's famous National Style-O. The Johnson even has the palm trees sand-etching. | Regal Resonator at Sam Ash Hohner Resonator at Active Musician |
|
MicrophoneThe Shure SM 57 is something like the all-time favourite for not only guitars and snare drums. I myself love it for vocals, too, more than the SM 58 that is normally associated here. | Shure SM 57 at Sam Ash for $99 |

Hi Ingo,
We are almost neighbors. I am a lonely New Yorker musician living in the Black Forest the past 30 years.
I am writing some new songs and have stumbled on your two “Dire Straits Style” songs on your homepage. I´d like to BUY them to play along with and do some creative work BUT I need a version WITHOUT any singing on it. I´d like to do some arranging and harmonizing and I give you my word that I will send you a copy of any finished versions and not publish anything without you agreeing. I´m not out to steal any ideas but rather some creative work that I would gladly share. If you lived in my area I would stop by and jam – that is if you would even play with a 60 year old. But again I have alot of experience.
Please let me know if you would like to share with me?
Thanks again,
Frank Haensel
