    12-string on Angel of Mercy

While working on the WIKI page for the Communiqué album Jean-Francois and me discussed if there is a 12-string on Angel of Mercy on the studio version (Mark's rhythm guitar). I know he played the Baldwin 12-string live in 1980/81.

I paste in our email discussion, maybe some others can help with their suggestions.

    >>

JF: About guitars 2 and 3 in Angel of Mercy:
    - I'm quite 100% sure that it's the same guitar on left channel, for rhythm and solo

I: Yes, I don't hear a gap or some sound change either, so you might be right.

JF:  I don't think it's a 12 strings, but a normal one with a little bit of chorus

I: This is possible. It is sure that he played a 12-string on the MM tour (I would say on all concerts, the Baldwin by the way). On the Communiqué tour he played bottle-neck, so the black Tele would be my no 1 guess here.

I wondered where he got the idea with the 12-string from, so I listened again to that rhythm guitar on the album. Chorus and 12-string can sound really similar (a chorus in a way imitates a 12 string), and I think Mark did possibly not play a higher octave string for the g strings (I think otherwise he can't play the lead licks he played on the MM tour)

JF: – I've a few recordings from the On location tour:
                  – Emerald city 12/11/80
                  – New York 14/11/80
                  – Wiesbaden 05/05/81
                  – Bruxelles-Werchter 05/07/81
                  – Luxembourg 06/07/81
I can't really hear 12 strings sounds in Angel of mercy in any of these gigs. Can you confirm on which gig he played it?

I: Should be on all, just listened to Wiesbaden to check again (the band introduction section). As said, there does not seem to be an octave string for the g, and I guess the string pairs are rather close on the Baldwin, othewise you cannot play lead lines. He even bends some strings slightly it seems !

Unfortunately I don't have a Baldwin, and not even a 12-string at all, so I cannot check how exactly to do it :(

I had never noticed taht he played slide on this song in 79 !

Listening to Amsterdam 4/11 and Oslo 21/11 (the only 79 gigs with Angel that I have Cry)  now, and wow !

indeed ! How can I have not hear that from all these years !

However, it's not very clear, I can hear a very little bottle-neck here and here, but not all during the song, and the solo is normal fret.

Listening also to Wiesbaden. The band introduction section is one of my all time fav bootleg sections, especially the one from Werchter (Once upon a time CD), it brings me almost to tears every time I listen to it, you know the interaction between Mark's guitar and Alan's keyboards. The one from Werchter features a lot of iconic MK fingerstyle with some "chicken" picking, and that's why I thought it difficult to play it on a 12-strings, but as you say, if the strings pairs are rather close…it can helps……and well, it's MarkWink

the Wiesbaden section sounds indeed a little bit 12-strtings (at least more than Werchter), just before Mark start to talk. But its' not very iconic 12-strings sound, as we know in general pop-folk music (Byrds, Eagles, Led Zep…)

My mistake, I was not precise: I don't think the ones from late '79 are slide, I refered to the ones from early '79.

Angel of mercy was played as an encore on the bootlegs Düsseldorf Febr. 13, 1979, Mannheim Febr. 14 (on Stolberg Febr. 15 they played Nadine instead), and on Febr. 18 they played both.

    Ah OK

Indeed, I was not sure. It seemed to me that I could hear a very little slide on late 79, but now, I guess it's only fingers slide.

From early 79, I only have Rockpalalst and Philadelphia, then pinkpop in june and Boston in september, so that's all I know.

I would love to hear the boots you're talking about Laugh

Would it be possible to download them somewhere ?EmbarassedConfused

Ingo, you're so great ! Laugh
Just a few minutes after I've asked for and here your are !

I'm not sure about Do America, I guess it's rather Paul Franklin on lap steel; as it's credited on the booklet (UK version).

About slide on others songs, I've thought for a long time that Mark played some on his national on Old Pigweed and In the heartland, but after seeing RB playing his lap-national (can wee spell it this way ?) on All that matters, I guess he did the same on these 2 songs.

Of course, you've ommitted Donegan's gone. I like very much the 2007 versions during the KTGC promotion tour, where he plays licks from "dark was the night" an old delta blues which inspired Ry Cooder for Paris,Texas.

Mark should have played more bottle-neck. It fits very well with finger style.

Slide on Angel of Mercy ! How can I believe it ?!
What is great with you Ingo, is that by after all these years, I continue to discover new things about my fav band ! thank you so much ! Laugh

It appears in the comments, too. I have seen that the automatic spam filter caught some other versions of your comment, normally it is reliable but sometimes e.g. with multiple comments or with many URLs it moves a comment to the spam folder for manual review.

Yes it's the same model, but I don't think it's the SAME GUITAR. if memory serves, GF said that the guitar used on Cleaning my gun, was a new one, not an old late 70ies model.

BTW, on this tune, there's 2 rhythm guitars, one played by Mark, and one played by RB. I guess both are 12 strings guitars.

I think that the first one we can hear is Mark, and Richard's one comes in just a litlle bit after, with the drums.

The first one sounds more fingerstyle, and the 2nd one strummed.

Check the "Gear on all songs" pages, and there will be soon the guitar parts on the GL albumSmile

(when I find the time Wink)

I think the new one is green with a kind of green-black sunburst, and I think the one on AoM was red (although mus admit that I don't remember where I saw a colour pic of it, most pics I know of it are black/white)

He once said that he borrowed that guitar from a friend by the way.
