Wow, never seen this one before.

There IS in fact another amp right of the Peavey, a Twin Reverb !!  I have a picture from late 78 that shows them with three Twin reverbs, but no where he played the Music man and a Twin reverb. Or Mark played the Music Man and the Peavey and David the Twin?

Here is the picture I was talking of, might be Berlin October 29, 1978.

And this here (from the Communiqué tour book) might be Hamburg Oct. 28. There might be the same Twin right of the Peavey, too (?)

    Nice ! Laugh

I put a comment, but it doesn't appears (iIguess it's because I pasted it from "notepad" ?!Confused) so here it is :

About the strap, it's funny because I thought at first that it was the same strap, put upside.
I have a similar strap (although black and not brown), and at first I put it in the "normal" way (thin side in front of me), but when I saw pics of Mark with the new strap, I put it with the thin side in my back, because I thought that he did this way.
I have discovered here, on your blog, that it was another strap.
BTW,the strap provided with the sig Strat is the same as the brown one. I guess it was the strap model provided by Fender with the 60's strats.

I'm very proud to have a pic that Ingo never seen before LaughWink It's very unusualLaugh

I thnik we must be careful with internet pics caption. I don't remember the site where "my" pic comes from, so I don't know how the caption accurate is.

nevertheless, regarding Mark's clothes and guitar, the pic is quite sure from late 1978, so that's what's importantSmile

about the strap issue, I looked again at the "Live at BBC" cover and I saw that Mark had the neck lace and the rosewood strat, but with the brown thin strap, so the neck lace hint isn't always a proof of early 79 or am I wrong ?Confused

BTW, was this neck lace related to Holly Vincent ?EmbarassedConfused

First the strap: I am pretty much sure that he got the Music Man strap in late 1978, probably around the date of the Hamburg gig (October 28) where he had it the first time (and  Europe's biggest Music Man distributor at the time – No. 1 Music – was located in Hamburg). So all pictures showing him with the brown strap on the Strat are from before this date. The one on Live at the BBC must be late 78 or early 79 (but definitely not from the gig recorded on this CD, London July 19, 1978.

You are right with the second picture, it must be earlier: maple neck Strat, brown strap, and it seems David's Strat is still wood colour instead of black. I think it was painted black at the same time as Mark's rosewood Strat was painted red, about late summer / autumn 1978.

In summer 1978 Mark played Twin Reverbs with Marshall cabs. I think the stage looks very professional and bigger than in the clubs they still played then, no idea when exactly it was taken, but summer 78 seems most likely to me.

Here is a picture from Mannheim, Febr. 14, 1979, might be from around the same time as the one with the 12-string (clothes seems to be right). There is some tape on the microphone that seems to be different, so possibly not the same day.

I'm not an expert in these dates, so I trust you when you're talking about that subjectSmile, but I must admit that I don't understand all very well nowCryEmbarassed

"The one on Live at the BBC must be late 78 or early 79 (but definitely not from the gig recorded on this CD, London July 19, 1978."

And you say that after Hamburg, he got the music man strap.

If so, how could the pic from Live BBC cover be from early 79 ? as it has the brow strap (or am I blindSurprised)

About the Live BBC cover, I just wanted to point out that he already had the neck lace and still the brown strap.
So I guess that the neck lace came around late 78. So, pics with the neck lace are not necessarily from early 79.Cool

He also could have used the brown strap, even after he got the music man oneConfused

About the neck lace, I wonder if it's related to Holly Vincent. I don't remember if it's very accurate in the Oldfield's book, but I guess he met her around late 78 or early 79, and they broke in late 79. As Ed Bicknell said, the day of the break-up, Mark sung WDYTYG in a very special mood, but I don't know the exact date, and even if there's a recording of it…ConfusedCool

About amps, I find strange Mark playing on a Peavey, but who knows ? I guess it's rather David's, but in this case, why should have Mark used a Muic man AND a twin reverb. Maybe for backup ?

LaughI had a dream : after the gear database will be completedWink, we should have a database of all pics in chronological order.LaughLaughLaugh

OK, I know it's a dreamCry. It would be a pharaonic job, and I even couldn't help youEmbarassed, apart from travelling to Germany, in order to scan your thousands of pics.Cool

    Maybe one day…Smile

On my cover of Live at the BBC he has the black Music Man strap (however other way around, thin end at the horn).

All the pictures with the brown strap on the Strat that I have seen seem to be from 1978, never again after he got the Music man strap.

The strap on the 12-string might be brown one, so possibly it was used for one of the other guitars when he had the black one for the Strat.

I also don't think that Mark plays the Peavey.

I think that he played the Music Man and the Fender (although it is a bit strange to put David's amp between Mark's amps).

Possible reasons: (a) need of more volume on bigger stages, (b) to cover a wider angle with best sound, (c) mixing two sounds tow get a unique new sound

A picture database and a guitar database would be nice, I can imagine that this site will have something like this in the future. Unfortunately it is all so much work, so the more will help, the sooner we will have it.

Ah Ok, all is clear nowSmile

At first, I thought that the music man strap was wide Full-length (like some straps does, e.g. the actual Fender ones). So when I saw this thin end, I thought it was the brown one. And the B&W pic doesn't help that muchConfused

    about amps :

Possible reasons: (a) need of more volume on bigger stages, (b) to cover a wider angle with best sound, (c) mixing two sounds tow get a unique new sound

    (a) doesn't the sound of the amp get driven into desk for the FOH sound ? If so, why have 2 amps to get more volume ? The volume is adjusted by the mixing desk isn't it ? Or were the stages to small fo having a FOH system sound ? Do you think that in 78 gigs, the sound was directly coming from amps ? I guess it the was the case in clubs

(e.g. barbarella's), but after summer 78, I thought that they played in venues which looked like cconcert halls ?

    (b) do you mean by switching amps depending on songs ?

Of course the amps were mic'ed, with more volume I mean just on stage. It is possible that Mark did not have much guitar on the monitor system but wanted to hear it directly from the amp, in this case two amps have more volume. And with covering a wider angle I mean that when you move a bit to the side, the sound from the amp changes as the guitar speakers beam high frequencies. With two amps you are more flexible and have a wider area with good sound on stage.

I find strange to add amps for getting more monitor volume. It could have disturbed the sound tech, or even the FOH sound.

On your pic with the maple strat a brown strap, they have big monitor system, so they had enough wide area stage monitor sound I think.

I would rather guess that one amp was for backup, or maybe combinated for a "new" sound
