Alternate Sultans of Swing solo take from first album session – unheard before – exclusively on mk-guitar.com

Here you will find an alternate take of the Sultans of Swing first  solo from the recording session for the first album at Basing Street Studios in February 1978. Unfortunately the quality is more than poor, you might guess where it is coming from…

It is not so much different, but it is for sure not the take  that was released. This can maybe heard best between 0:15 and 0:22 where the phrasing and some notes are different, similar to some live versions or to the version from Pathway Studios.

And that’s the neck pick-up, I’d think the FS-1, isn’t it?

  1. fantastic ! 🙂 where did you get that ?
Indeed it’s the neck PU. Nice to hear that Mark tried differents sounds for the song, even in studio 🙂
It could have sounded like on chorus (one of my fav versions !)
ah aha ah ….. how can it be that Sultans has becomed the most well known iconic 1+2 PU strat sound ? 🙂
A least, we can say that it wasn’t Mark’intention 🙂

  2. It is the sound coming from Mark’s monitoring headphones during his voice take (taken from guitar hero), isn’t it ?
so maybe the whole song version is a bit different ? Including last solo ?

  3. You are right of course, it is the headphones leakage from the Guitar Hero vocal track, amplified about 45 db.
The intro seems to be a different take, too, but is 99% identical, also most licks, or you don’t hear the lick at all, some of them seem to be recorded after the vocals.

There is no last solo, just the backing, and the track ends soon after the last verse.
